Your Bookkeeper Samira

Accounting for the Margins

I grew up on the East Coast, moved around a bit in early adulthood, and then came to Oregon in 2015. Over the years I worked as a caregiver, teacher, dancer, server, barista, delivery driver, warehouse worker, and receptionist.

My life in accounting began in 2018 when I took on some tasks from the bookkeeper at my workplace. I learned the trade from her and later became the assistant bookkeeper. I worked in accounting and payroll jobs for small businesses (25-50 employees) until I started my own business as an independent bookkeeper in 2024.

At the same time I was finding my professional path, my values too have grown and become clear. Once raised to be an individual, I've learned that I need community. And that community needs all of us. Many people—Black, queer, poor, disabled, indigenous, trans, neurodivergent, undocumented, and others—have been left out and made to live at the margins. I want to do my part to challenge the status quo. My goal is to make accounting services accessible to the most marginalized members of our community, to freely share my skills and knowledge, to stand up to capitalism and fascism, and to work together to build a future for all of us.

That's my fight anyway. What's yours? Want some help?
